Be careful
The most common death by new players is fall damage. There's a high chance that you'll spawn on a tall lavacast, so watch your steps and make your way down safely.
You can climb vines to reach the elevated highways (Y113) or make your way to the sea level highways (Y64) to have an easier time getting further from the center of spawn.
Essential resources
Wood may be scarse on the ground of spawn, but there's an oasis at Y244 at coordinates 0 0, check out : Spawn ; If you cannot get up there look for bamboo and dead bodies of other unlucky players to get essential items. Pigs, Sheep and Cows don't spawn frequently in the 1000x1000 blocks region, but there are plenty of cods and salmons in the water.
Craft a shield with your first iron ingot, it can block most types of damage, most importantly explosions from creepers.
Getting away from spawn
It's recommended to use the Overworld Highways and avoid the nether prior to diamond gear (You can use the nether roof , but you may risk to suffocate in bedrock if you execute the pearl clip incorrectly).2000 blocks is a safe distance to progress further. To start your first base it's recommended to go at least 25'000 blocks away.
Useful items to avoid death
- Totems
- Fire resistance potions
- Chorus fruits: can help you escape traps made by other players
- Ender pearls: they're most useful in relog activated stasis chambers
- Enchanted golden apples: they are very rare, most commonly found in ancient cities, but worth the journey
- Slow falling potions: can save you if you don't have an elytra while building high up in the sky
- Milk: It's able to remove any negative effect such as poison or slowness
